A Pastel drawing

Seeing all the possible colors spread across the night-sky with black intricate silhouettes of trees and buildings is one of my favorite sights.

I am planning to create a whole collection of different sunsets and cities. I'm open for suggestions (colors, size)

Charity

I've decided - I want to create art for charity. But, since I am poor myself - I guess, I'll donate 95% and get 5% for my work.

I have lots of projects in my mind: paintings, installations and other projects that will help the forest, the old people (like veterans), and children living in bad neighborhoods.

I myself grew up in a bad neighborhood: a small town-like village (that's what they call it officially) in Eastern Ukraine. There was one place in this dump by a huge stinky factory: HCTC (House of Children's and Teens' Creativity) - I went there since I was 6, and by the time I became 10 - I was signed up to almost all the courses available: Drawing, Writing, Sculpting, Doll Theater... what not?

Meanwhile I was bullied at school for being different (smart), but I was infinitely happy because there was one place where I belonged. I didn't only learn stuff on the Art-school level, I also won several tournaments, and of course made friends. Though as a rule teachers love me more than class-mates. Soon my poems were printed in the local journal, as well as illustrations for teenagers' winning sonnets.

That place gave me the ability to see art anywhere and to turn anything into art. I honestly didn't realize till I became a teenager that I was growing up in a very bad neighborhood in a very bad time: I was growing up in Ukraine in the 90-s, it was tough, I family was completely broke, several of my classmates drank and smoked since they were 8 (!), and HCTC protected me from all that and let me grow up into an Artist instead of a junkie.

That's why I want to help the world: people, good people, need placed like HCTC, they need people like my teachers!

Now, I never judge people by their roots and where they grew up. Just because I have my own example.

By the way, I visited HCTC 10 years later: it's some sort of a sewing school now... Half of it... The other half was locked away... The huge playground around it is pretty much abandoned.

I think I know where my first big revenue will go...

My love for reading

I am not allowed to be called a book-worm, because despite my love and respect for literature - I have read less than 60 books in my entire life, since I am a slow reader.
For a long time I felt embarrassed of the fact, and people thought this meant I was generally slow and stupid.
In fact, I have a reason not to try and speed up my reading. It's because of my love and respect for books. An author may spend years writing his masterpiece, and a reader will spend a boring evening reading it briefly?!
One of my favorite books is the Perfume, and I loved it so much, I read it very fast - in 26 days. I enjoyed running home from school (I was in high-school then) to return to my favorite character - a genius, understood by no one, and surrounded by selfish idiots who cared only about money and statuses... Later I realized, I was the only one who loved Jean-Baptiste - he was a hated main character by most people (I wonder if their opinions would turn after Game of Thrones :D ). I really love those misunderstood geniuses, who have no human compassion but only their great goal. That's why I sometimes love the villains more than the main characters, who are lame and boring with their "goodness".

I was disappointed when I found out no friends of mine have read the book or at least saw the movie! Then my husband's aunt said "I read it and loved it!" I wanted to ask her - what did she think about a certain chapter, and she replied "I don't remember much - I read it once when I had insomnia - it was the Perfume and the another book - to spend the night". See? How can such a masterpiece be shared with another book and read for just spending a sleepless night?! This is bloody blasphemy, I say!
So I love spending months in the world of the book I'm reading, and not knowing how the story will resolve, having time to understand, fall in love, get angry, forgive and contemplate over every character and every situation. And because of this careful reading I have the ability to form personal opinions and theories about each book, and memorize every little detail so that I can basically close my eyes and reread the book years later.
The only time when I regretted being a slow and attentive reader was when it took me 1.5 years to read 3.5 books of Twilight saga and only in the middle of the last book I realized it was such a long load of.. ughm... stupidity that I just left it unfinished. I truly regret memorizing that.
But still, the language of Twilight is amazing, and I learned many new words, and also heard about several classics I never heard of: Wuthering heights, Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice (heard about the last one, but after such a good advertising decided to finally read it). Have you noticed, each Twilight book is sort of a remake of these books? It might be an interesting idea if it didn't look more like lack of fantasy and originality (remembering that the story is about vampires and werewolves which is sooo original). Here's a funny stereotypes crash: I read this book because my boyfriend made me read it.

My favorite place to look for a new book to read is Penguin  Classics series, though classics is not the only "genre" I love.

Deviantart

Most probably, this web-site is familiar to you. But if it's not, or if you have seen it once and haven't realized its potential - do read this post!
Deviantart.com is a great web-site which lets artists from all over the world to submit their art (not necessarily paintings and photos - crafts and even literature also goes!)
Advantages:
+ very popular - when you submit a picture - it will automatically appear on the front page (among the Newest) - and will instantly be seen by all the visitors
+ no moderation - no grumpy administrator will tell you your art is too ugly to be received (unlike all those Stocks that will give you lots of rules and boundaries and then decide that your art isn't original enough)
+ you can sell your works (for example, have your painting printed as a puzzle, magnet, coaster)

Disadvantages:
- very popular and with no moderation: thousands submit their art all the time, and if you submit a brilliant picture it has a good chance to get lost in the flow!

What should you do?
*Join communities that "get" you
*Promote yourself via social-networks
*PRACTICE AND RAISE YOUR SKILLS!
*If you want - you can try to see what the audience likes and try to please them (but it's better to not give up and continue being yourself)

There is also a premium accaunt, but so far I am content with the free one :)

Also! This web-site is great because it is very beginner-friendly. I haven't met much trolls there, and many of my pictures were added to somebody's Favorites (which is great if you have a low self-esteem).

But I must warn you: if a web-site says you can sell your art - it doesn't mean you WILL sell your art!
It may take weeks or months before you get noticed, and you need to really work on your skills and marketing (proposing what people will love). I will say right away - I never try to please the customers - it's more important and hard (!) to express the real you.

So you're welcome to see my Gallery - it's not much, because I don't submit everything I draw.

Night road

A digital painting
I find the sky gradient after the Sun has disappeared is one of the most beautiful things to see. Especially when you ride an interstate and see nothing but very intricate black silhouettes of fields, trees and sleeping cities. I have painted and photographed a whole collection of sunsets and roads.

Welcome to this new and uncooked blog of mine

Welcome to my new blog. It doesn't contain pretty much... anything yet, so meanwhile you are welcome to my Facebook page Sophia Newtown.
Very soon this blog is going to be filled with information about me, pictures, short-stories, photos of my crafts and reviews of web-sites I like. By the way, if you have a web-site about arts, crafts, fashion or sci-fi - I'll be glad to visit it and post a review in my blog (I never troll and I never write bad reviews - I can only decide not to write one).
